Siobhan is an avid traveller. Born in small town North Queensland, Australia, Siobhan spent most of her youth dreaming of a life living around the world. Having undertaken a multitude of short holidays around her home country as a teenager, Siobhan quit her day job at the age of 20, packed up her life and just 5 days before her 21st birthday, flew to London to start a new life.
Culture shock managed to get the best of her and after 4 short months Siobhan flew home to her family. Here she spent the next 3 years making new goals, forming everlasting friendships and dreaming of another chance to travel the world for a living. During this time Siobhan took countless holidays rapidly expanding her knowledge and curiosity of the world.
By her 24th birthday, Siobhan had travelled to 12 countries spanning 4 continents. One month later her International Teaching Certificate was complete. While in the process of planning a 2 month round the world adventure from December 2012 to February 2013 Siobhan made the decision to continue on from that trip and once again take the plunge to move her life.
With just 3 months to prepare, Siobhan sold everything she owned bit by bit, hosting countless garage sales with the help of family and friends and utilising numerous websites to auction off furniture and electronics. The overseas job hunt was short and sweet, with the first position that Siobhan applied for resulting in a tentative job offer from a country wide institution in Vietnam. The position was for an ESL teacher in a small city in the south of Vietnam, along the Mekong Delta. There was one small final hurdle to overcome before assuming a position on the teaching staff at the college; which was a demonstration class.
In December of 2012 Siobhan set off with a 6.3kg backpack for the 2 month trip of a lifetime.
3 continents, 9 countries, 60 days.
February 2013 saw Siobhan heading to Vietnam (which marked a significant milestone – 21 countries visited). Excitement quickly set in as her visa was processed and her passport was stamped for the umpteenth time in 2 months. After a short overnight stay in Ho Chi Minh City to try and sleep off the 3 day flying expedition from Brazil to Vietnam (via Australia for 15 hours!) Siobhan was on a bus with her soon to be employer heading for Can Tho City.
After a whirlwind first week in Can Tho meeting endless English Teachers and other staff at the college, experiencing countless amazing Vietnamese dishes and viewing classes each night, Siobhan passed her demonstration class and was teaching the second week, settling into her new life.
She is now living and working successfully with many new friends in Vietnam, travelling whenever she can and continues to plan her next adventure. Siobhan plans to share her experiences in the hope that many might be inspired to follow their own travel dreams no matter what they are. It’s a small world after all….
